Stoughton Chamber of Commerce

Stoughton, Wisconsin is a unique destination located just 15 miles south of Madison. Founded in 1847 and known for its Norwegian heritage, including the famous Syttende Mai celebration of Norwegian Independence Day on May 17th, Stoughton’s preservation of history and architecture offer visitors a full weekend of exploration and discovery.

A good place to start your tour is the Stoughton Historical Museum, owned and operated by the Stoughton Historical Society. The museum is housed in a unique brick and stone structure built in 1858 as a Universalist Church for Yankee settlers. Designed by Madison architect Stephan Vaughan Shipman, it was built in simple Greek revival style using "Cream City" brick brought from Milwaukee by teams of oxen. This beautiful museum was the first of dozens of buildings in Stoughton to be placed on the National Registry of Historic Places. The Society also maintains additional exhibits in the 1913 Railroad Depot, which now houses the Stoughton Chamber of Commerce as well as the Luke Stoughton Pioneer Home, thought to be the first house of the City’s founder.

Take advantage of six self guided tours and enjoy historic neighborhoods featuring homes built in the French, Italian, and Victorian styles. The downtown tours include Stoughton’s bustling business district, literally littered with eclectic shops featuring unique gifts, clothing, food … anything and everything imaginable.

More recently, Stoughton has become a magnet for artists of all kinds. From the galleries, studios and art spaces throughout the city, to performances at the renowned Stoughton Opera House, it’s easy to understand why this community has drawn artists from drama to dance, painting to pottery, jewelry design, music, gourmet cooking, and much, much more. Browse. Buy. Or even better, get involved. Stoughton’s downtown shops offer demonstrations and classes in many artistic pursuits, available at your convenience.
