What's New at Syttende Mai in 2010?

2010 Theme – "Stoughton's Senior Citizens – Foundation of our Community"

Each year, the Syttende Mai Executive Committee chooses a theme for the Syttende Mai festival.  This year's theme is "Stoughton's Senior Citizens – Foundation of our Community".  The city of Stoughton has a very high number of seniors – and many of them are very active in the community in a variety of ways.  It would be very rare to attend a function without seeing the senior citizen population participating or volunteering in some way.  We salute them and feel that they are very important to the community.

Folk Dancing Group from Minnesota to Visit Stoughton for Syttende Mai
This folk dancing group from Dassel, MN was organized 28 years ago.  The twenty Dassel residents come from several walks of life; but for two hours on Sunday, they rehearse with the gentle yet energetic music of Scandinavia.  The troupe has performed throughout the United States as well as Norway.  They will be performing a street dance on Saturday (May 15th) @ 3:00 on the corner of Main & Division Streets.  They will also take part in the 5:30 Stoughton High School Norwegian Dancer performance at the Community Building on Saturday.  After participating in the activities at Christ Lutheran Church (see below) they will participate in the Norwegian Sunday parade.

Christ Lutheran Church,
700 Cty. Hwy. B – Stoughton
10:30 a.m.    May 16, 2010

You're at the right place if you see Norwegian Fjord horses grazing on the lawn.
Christ Lutheran is the place for Norwegians or Norwegians enthusiasts to be on Sunday morning Syttende Mai weekend.  Get here early and enjoy the folk dancing of Dassel's Leikarring, a folk dancing group specializing in authentic country folk dances of Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland.  They will dance in the narthex before worship and in the sanctuary during worship. During worship enjoy a traditional Norwegian Liturgy and hymns – portions of which will be spoken and sung in Norwegian.  The Edvard Grieg Chorus will provide special music and if you look around, don't be surprised to see a troll or two in the congregation.  Worship ends with the singing of "Ja, Vi Elsker Dette Landet."  Following worship the Ole Ellickson Orchestra will entertain us in the narthex and coffee, beverages and Norwegian treats will be served in the café' and Fellowship Hall.  For those visiting for the weekend, it is a great place to relax before the parade.

New Racing Events and Changes to the 2 Mile Lil' Syttende Mai Run

After much thought and discussion, the committee decided to add a 10 mile event to Saturday morning's activities.  The 1st annual 10 Mile Syttende Mai Run will begin at 8:00 at the 10 mile mark of the 20 mile Syttende Mai Run.  (town of Dunn, Sand Hill Rd.)  The 38th Annual Syttende Mai 20 mile run will begin at Madison's Capitol Square as in past years, beginning at 7:30.  The 24th annual Syttende Mai Walk will begin with a "rolling start" – 6-7 a.m. – from Badger Bowl – Rimrock Rd., as in past years.  The Lil' Syttende Mai Run – which starts on Hoel Ave & follows the last two miles of the Syttende Mai Run – has been changed to the Lil' Syttende Mai Community Run/Walk – anyone who wishes to enter and participate in this run can do so.  This is a change from past years where the event was slated for ages 16 & under.  Families and friends are encouraged to run/walk together and there is a competition between the Stoughton elementary schools to see what school has the most participants.  A $300 award will be given to the winning school to be used for recess equipment.
