Our presenter, Victoria Kiefer is a Master’s candidate in the Program of Maritime Studies at East Carolina University. In 2016 Victoria first joined the Wisconsin Historical Society’s Maritime Preservation Office as a University of Wisconsin Sea-Grant fellow where she assisted Maritime Archaeologists in researching, documenting, and sharing Wisconsin shipwreck stories throughout the summer. In June of 2017 Victoria returned to the Society’s Maritime Office as a Maritime Archaeologist. While working with the Society, she has studied early Great Lakes sailing and steam ships and the people and industries that are associated with these vessels. Victoria will be sharing her knowledge of scow schooners and their importance to immigrant families as entry points for many into the Great Lakes maritime trades as sailors, masters, and vessels owners.
