• 2026 Wisconsin DOT Construction Project Updates

  • There are two separate State of Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) US 51 Construction projects beginning in Stoughton this month.

WisDOT US 51 Project, from Harrison Street to Roby Road and from Roby Road to County B, begins on March 24, 2026.

WisDOT US 51 Project on Main Street between Fifth and Sixth Streets resumes on March 30th. There will be a road closure with a short detour for part of the project. A suggested detour map provided by the Chamber is provided. The detour adds less than 3 minutes to get to your destination. It is well worth the extra time to patronize the businesses located in the area.

The City of Stoughton Public Works and Stoughton Chamber of Commerce, led by Brett Hebert, Director of Public Works, and Sarah Ebert, Chamber President, respectively, have partnered to share verified project updates through their official communication channels. While local officials do not manage this construction project, Public Works and the Chamber of Commerce recognize the importance of making accurate information available to those they serve: the residents, organizations, businesses, and visitors of Stoughton.

This year’s project overview will be available on the 511 Wisconsin Construction Projects Website. Construction projects often change quickly. Public Works receives regular updates from the WisDOT Project Manager. Updates will be shared as the project evolves.

  • The purpose of this project is to provide a safe and efficient transportation system along the US 51 corridor to meet present and long-term travel demand while minimizing environmental disturbance. This will be achieved by addressing existing safety conditions, accommodating travel demand, improving existing pavement conditions, enhancing bicycle and pedestrian accommodations, and considering corridor preservation and long-term planning measures.
US 51 from Harrison Street to Roby Road will include the following improvements:
    • Reconstructing from Harrison Street to Kings Lynn Road with a cross-section of a Two-Way Left Turn Lane (TWLTL) in between. From Kings Lynn Road to Roby Road will remain as a 4-lane urban configuration.
    • Reconstructing sidewalk, curb ramps, and crosswalks to meet Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards.
    • Intersection improvement at Hults Road/Jackson Street/US 51 to restrict Hults Road to right-in and right-out. Upgrading the signal equipment at the US 51 intersection.
US 51 from Roby Road to County B (east) will include the following improvements:
    • Reconstruct the existing rural 2‑lane undivided roadway to a 4‑lane urban divided roadway with a raised median.
    • Construct a 10‑foot‑wide sidewalk on both sides of US 51 up to the new pedestrian underpass near the Rutland/Dunn Townline Road intersection.
    • Reconstruct the Rutland‑Dunn Townline Road and County B (east) intersections to dual‑lane roundabouts.
    • Construct a pedestrian underpass just north of the Rutland‑Dunn Townline Road intersection.
    • Posted speed limit reduction from 55 miles per hour (mph) to 35 mph.
    • Install a continuous lighting system in the median.
    2026 Traffic Control
US 51 from Harrison Street to South Quam Drive:
    • This segment will be constructed under staged traffic conditions with one lane of traffic maintained in each direction. Some temporary pavement and adjustments to the Hults Road roundabout will be required.
    • Short, limited-duration closures of Mainline US 51 to complete water and sanitary lines, including some lateral work.

Stoughton Public Works is working closely with Stoughton Health, Skaalen Retirement Services, the Stoughton Police, EMS, and Fire to create and communicate routes, ensuring that patients, residents, family, and staff have access to both organizations.

    Confirmed Resources:

It is confirmed that WisDOT uses partner portals with Google Maps and Waze to share road closures, which provides users with alternate routes they can follow with confidence.

There are signs posted around Stoughton marking routes to Downtown Stoughton and the Hospital.
