Scholarly Scoop: Nature Writers and Dane County Natural Areas
Join us in welcoming Joshua Mabie, Associate Professor of English and author of the book entitled, “New Nature Writing and Wisconsin Landscape Words." A group of young British writers and poets called The New Nature Writers have recently worked to preserve old, particular, and odd words for British landscape features that are in danger of being lost to globalization and technology. Wisconsin doesn’t have nearly as long a history as Britain, but we do have just as many wonderful and strange landscape features and phenomena to describe. Therefore, in addition to providing an introduction to some of the best New Nature Writers, this talk will explore ways to engage and describe Dane County’s beautiful countryside and natural areas. About the Speaker: Dr. Josh Mabie studies ways that writers engage particular places and represent environmental challenges. He has taught in the English department at UW-Whitewater since 2012. In addition to scholarly essays that he has recently published on topics such as climate change and the New British Nature Writers, Dr. Mabie is currently writing an environmental history of Stoughton and a collection of essays about the farm he purchased last fall just east of town on Highway 51.
