A single shotgun blast pierced the starless autumn night, and Officer Paul Kraby crumpled to the cold pavement, killed instantly by the the deadly shot aimed at his head. The murder of the well-liked police officer rocked the Wisconsin town which was already staggered by the depths of the Great Depression and the corruption of bootlegging. Who killed Paul Kraby and, more importantly, why? As three young reporters begin unraveling the facts, Stoughton, Wisconsin's dark secrets slowly begin to emerge in the pages of "Kraby: The Dark Secrets Behind a True-Crime Murder" by Steve Fortney. The public is welcome to join us as Steve will be presenting a presentation about his new book and will have copies available for sale. This historical novel differs from other studies done in the past in that it examines in some detail the conditions of the city of Stoughton at the time of the killing. The political, social, economic conditions were crucial in the circumstances of the mystery. Drought, depression, smuggling, the political and social divisions between the old-line Yankees and the newly arrived Norwegians, and prohibition were important factors. Kraby’s story; in this account is not only about an unsolved murder but by way of telling by native born apprentice reporter Karl Hansen is a valentine to the city, the hometown of this reporter involved in the investigation.
